About London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week is one of the biggest events in the fashion calendar. It is one of the most important fashion weeks in the world, on the same level as New York, Paris, and Milan. Held twice a year, the main venue for the designers to show off their wares is Somerset House. The schedule is hectic, with dozens of designers showing their newest collection. It’s a place to see and be seen, as the street style and front row of the catwalk become increasingly important. London Fashion Week is a place to see the trends that everyone will be following in half a year.

The first London Fashion Week was in 1983. A separate fashion week for men was introduced in 2012, which has rapidly grown. London Fashion Weekend was also introduced, and then became London Fashion Week Festival. London Fashion Week Festival is an opportunity for the public to get to participate in the festivities of Fashion Week. The public now has the opportunity to mingle with insiders while looking at the designers pop-up shops. Additionally, the pop-up shops aren’t limited to British brands anymore, which shows the cultural zeitgeist that London Fashion Week has become.

London Fashion Week has also reinvented itself in other ways. In the past, the public had to wait weeks to buy designs, while a select few stepped out wearing the clothes days after the show. However, brands such as Burberry and Topshop are now let people shop the collection as soon as the show finishes. London Fashion Week has also become more accessible to the public, with not just designer clothes being shown, but also high-street fashion. Additionally, London Fashion Week has transcended consumerism, with exhibitions showing off designers running at the same time. Presentations on styling and trends also run during Fashion Week.

Now, London Fashion Week is about more than just buying the new collection of the season. It has become a celebration of fashion in all its forms, and has become far more accessible to the average consumer. With designers now able to stream their show live, I’m eager to see what the future of LFW is.
